G&L in the beginning
Muskegon, in the 1920’s had a large and growing industrial work force which provided an exciting opportunity for gentlemen like George Baldas and Louie Coredas. These two Greek immigrants, opened the G&L sandwich shop in downtown Muskegon on Western Ave. in 1926. With thousands of workers in the downtown Muskegon area the hot dog thrived in the many small Greek-run, quick service restaurants. These restaurants remained open 24 hours a day. Generations grew up eating “red hots” as hot dogs were called back then. Most of these establishments were all located within a few city blocks in the cities center on Western Avenue. It was out of this era in Muskegon that the legend of G&L was defined. Ever-since then G&L has always been known for one thing – Greek Chili Dogs served fast and hot.
Over the years, more G&L restaurants have opened in Western Michigan and become widely known for their speedy service and generous portions. And while the menu has grown and the operations modernized, they have never lost the customer friendly atmosphere that helped create the G&L legend.
Today, G&L is owned by two brothers, Peter and Charles Johnson. The Johnson family has lived in Muskegon for five generations and have witnessed G&L’s AMAZING Greek Chili Dog stand the test of time and become a culinary icon in west Michigan. G&L’s proprietary hot dog, covered with George and Louie’s original secret chili sauce, creates a one-of-a-kind eating experience that has been bringing customer back for over 87 years.
When we bought the G&L restaurants in 1995, we committed ourselves to continuing a tradition -the popularity of G&L’s famous chili dog in western Michigan. We have added more restaurants over the years because we believe people in other parts of the state would welcome this straightforward approach to serving freshly-made food at prices that were just as easy to swallow. With our signature chili dog, varied menu and friendly table service, G&L provides a unique dinning opportunity in the growing restaurant industry.
